I had this quirky little idea floating around in my head of Cliff stripping off his superhero outfit and getting Betty to put it on, just for shits & giggles. I had been meaning to draw it for going on 3 years now believe it or not... and my how life can get in the way of the creative process...
Anyway, I finally started to work on this, bumping it up above other stuff on my "to draw list" when I learned that Dave Stevens, creator of The Rocketeer had passed away this past March and being so busy with my own crises, I hadn't heard a thing about it. Then to make matters worse, in a one-two punch, I find out that Bettie Page; Stevens' inspiration for The Rocketeer's love interest "Betty", had also passed away just last month. Both artist & muse gone in the same year...What are the odds of that??? What makes this even weirder is the fact that Dave modeled Cliff after himself.... so one can look at this and ask "Is it the ficticious "Cliff" & "Betty" or the factual Dave & Bettie?"
Well, either way you view this piece, its dedicated to the factual Dave & Bettie.
If there is an after life, and such a place as heaven exists, I'd like to think they're both there, enjoying eachother's company right now.

I had a mini-freakout while working on the last leg of this. I had the Rocketeer movie playing in the background and it was nearing the end credits, it was the part where Howard Hughes asks Cliff what was it like to strap that thing to his back and fly like a bat out of hell... Cliff responds: "It was the closest I'll ever get to Heaven Mr Hughes." Then Jenny (BETTY!-damn disney) looks up at him and Cliff says; "Well....Maybe not."
I don't know, it was just this really sweet, poignant, and sort of eerie moment.
